The Great Famine


The boys and girls from Mr O'Reilly's Fifth Class have been learning all about the Great Famine 1845 - 1849. It is believed that as many as 1 million Irish men, women and children perished during the famine and another 1 million emigrated from the island to escape poverty and starvation. Approximately 7,000 people died in Mullingar alone.

As part of their research, the children walked on part of 'The National Famine Way' which passes the Famine Graveyard in Robinstown. The graveyard provided a quiet and eerie setting for the children to reflect on the huge loss of life during that difficult period in Irish history. 

To complete their studies, the boys and girls worked in teams and produced fabulous projects as you can see from the photos below. Well done to everybody involved!
