Comórtas Litriú

Seachtain na Gaeilge is in full swing at Scoil Cholmáin Naofa. The hall was full of activity this afternoon as pupils from our fifth and sixth classes battled it out in our Comórtas Litriú. Between rounds, the classes recited several of their favourite dánta agus amhráin before we found our eventual spelling winner. Comhgairdeas do Niamh Mc Kenna a thóg an céad áit sa chomórtas faoi dheireadh.

Five of our fifth class students took part in a dance competition yesterday. Aisling Granahan, Eve Hickey, Amy Corroon and Áine Creagh from Mr Boyle's Fifth Class and Abigail Johnston from Mrs Walters'/Mrs Slevin's Fifth Class are members of Energy Plus Studios. Yesterday, during a club freestyle competition, the girls took part in many dances and came away with several awards. Well done girls!

Confirmation Memento

Our sixth class students were very busy over the last few weeks preparing for their special Confirmation Day, which was on Saturday last. It all went off without a hitch and reports from the children today were that a good day was had by all. The boys and girls arrived in school today in all their finery for their official Confirmation photographs.

The photos below show just a small sample of the painted plates that were made with the help of local artist Andrina Finch. These beautiful plates can be kept as a memento of the day and will be treasured for years to come I'm sure.

p1090515 - copyTwo classmates from Mr Boyle's Fifth Class took part in the I.A.B.A. Longford/Westmeath County Board Championships on Sunday last. Patrick O'Herron, who is a memeber of the Rochfortbridge Boxing Club, boxed in the 35kg category and was delighted to win first place. Jonathon Golden, from the Elite Boxing Club Mullingar, took part in the 38kg category and made it all the way to the final but unfortunately was beaten by a narrow margin. Congratulations boys on a great achievement!

Halloween Games Past and Present

During their recent History lessons, the students in Mrs Walters'/Mrs Slevin's Fifth Class have been investigating games from the past and comparing them to the games they play today. They interviewed, parents, grandparents and teachers, asking about outdoor and indoor games. With the Halloween holidays approaching, they had a special interest in games played at Halloween. Some of the games played by the children's grandparents have been passed down from generation to generation and are still enjoyed today. As an end of term treat today, the boys and girls had great fun playing many of those Halloween games!
