The annual Christmas Food Appeal has been running in the school over the past few weeks and was promoted and co-ordinated by Mrs Farrell's Second Class. They left boxes in every class and visited regularly to give a gentle reminder to everyone. Today, Ms Mary Mc Knight from the Mullingar Parish Centre came to the school to collect the donated food and was overjoyed with the huge response. Ms Mc Knight's car was full to bursting as she left. She expressed her thanks and assured the children that Sr Finbarr and her team will deliver the food to families in need in the Mullingar area. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthy cause.

Animals of the African Savanna

The savanna is an open landscape of grasslands found in tropical Africa. For half the year, savannas are hot and dry, and swept by wildfires. They also have a season of heavy rains. It is home to an amazing variety of wildlife.

Today, I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs Farrell's Second Class, who are currently undertaking projects on the animals found in the African savanna. During my short visit, the children spoke about the various animals they are researching and shared many interesting facts about them with me, such as:

A savanna elephant weighs the same amount as 100 people. They do not have bones in their trunk.

Lions sleep for most of the day. The lioness will hunt for most of the food, however the male lion will always eat first.

A giraffe's tongue is black and is long enough that they can clean their ears with it. They also have seven bones in their neck, which is the same as humans.

Hippos can hold their breath for up to five minutes under water. When they keep their nostrils, eyes and ears above water in order to breathe, the rest of their body is cooled by the water.

Well done to the children on all their hard work and best of luck as they finish off these wonderful projects!

Violin Lessons

In association with Music Generation, we have a number of music teachers who visit the school weekly and teach our students to play the trumpet, flute and guitar. The lucky boys and girls in our second classes have just been offered the opportunity to attend violin lessons in school. Today, twenty three excited children took up the offer and met their teacher, Mrs Francesca White. We wish Mrs White and her students luck in this new venture and we look forward to hearing the wonderful sounds of violins along the corridors of the school.

Halloween Fun!

There was fun and laughter all around in Mrs Deane's Second Class today. As an end of term treat, the boys and girls played Halloween games. They enjoyed bobbing for apples, finding a ring in flour and trying to bite an apple hanging from a string! It was wet and messy but so much fun as you can see from the photos below!
