Christmas Carol Service

2017

A hush fell over St Paul's Church at 11am this morning, as the annual St Colman's Christmas Carol Service began. The entire school body, family and friends and Fr Paul gathered to celebrate the Christmas Season in song and prayer. Children representing every class group read the story of Jesus' birth, while members of the living crib gathered on the altar. The readings were interspersed with Christmas hymns sung beautifully by our school choir. The children from our second classes, who will make their First Holy Communion next year, took part in The Procession of Light and decorated the Christmas Tree with symbols of Christmas.

At this time of the year, when one can get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the materialistic side of Christmas, it's nice to slow down and take a quiet moment to reflect and remember the true meaning of Christmas. This morning's service gave us the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Mad Moon!

mad moonThere was great excitement yesterday when a very special delivery finally made it's way to St Colman's. Our school choir's first CD has arrived just in time for Christmas!

The choir have built up quite the repertoire in recent years. Since we returned to school in September, the weekly Friday choir rehearsals have filled the corridors of St Colman's with the most joyful sound. They chose five songs for their first CD - Mad Moon, Can You Hear Me?, Candy Man, You Raise Me Up and Happy. The CD cover was designed by Luke Quigley from Fifth Class. This is a 'must have' for music lovers and an ideal gift for family and friends this Christmas. CD's cost €8 and are available in school.

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in this exciting project!

Fundraiser Festival

Congratulations to everyone involved in our 'Fundraiser Festival' in Mullingar Park Hotel on Saturday last. This was the first fundraiser of its kind for us and it proved to be a resounding success! With so much musical talent on our doorstep, we didn't have to look far for performers and so all the acts who took part are homegrown!

Lir Ukulele Band welcomed all our guests on their arrival and our very own school choir, fresh from recording their first CD,  delighted everyone with a number of songs from their repertoire. Then, three local and nationally acclaimed bands, The Blizzards, Fallen Lights and Radio Star, took over and kept everyone dancing into the early hours.

A HUGE THANK YOU to The Blizzards, Fallen Lights and Radio Star who took time out of their busy pre-Christmas schedule to perform for us. Thanks also to Lir Ukulele Band, St Colman's School Choir, St Colman's N.S. Parents Association, staff, students and anyone who helped out in any way big or small to make this festival a memorable night for all.

An Evening of Music

1 - copyYesterday evening at 6.30, parents/guardians and friends of St Colman's gathered in St Paul's Church for an evening of music performed by the talented musicians of the school.

The school choir and orchestra have performed on many occasions during the school year and they chose their favourite and most polished pieces for the very appreciative audience. The choir sang 'From a Railway Carriage' by Robert Louis Stevenson and 'Mad Moon' by Jonathan Dove. The orchestra then played  three pieces - 'Annie's Song', 'Sloop John B' and the 'Match of the Day' theme song.

Next up were the classes who are learning to play the recorder. Our Second Classes played that favourite nursery rhyme 'Old Macdonald' and our Third Classes played 'Closer' by The Chainsmokers. Mr Geraghty's Fourth Class followed with the Guns and Roses classic 'Sweet Child of Mine'. Ms Brennan's Fourth Class played 'Nancy Mulligan' by Ed Sheeran.

Our trumpet players played five pieces. The junior group played Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' and 'Oh When the Saints Come Marching in' made famous by Louis Armstrong back in 1938. The senior group played the theme music to 'Star Wars' and 'Massive Brass'. Maeve O'Hara followed with a solo piece, 'El Padrino' the theme song from The Godfather'.

The children learning guitar played two pieces. 'Songbird' by Oasis and the classic Ben E King song 'Stand by Me'.

Our saxophone and flute players played two pieces. The third class students played the nursery rhyme 'Frère Jacques' and the students from fourth, fifth and sixth classes played an Irish patriotic song written by Thomas Moore called 'The Minstrel Boy'.2 - copy

To finish the proceedings the choir sang two songs - 'This is the Bird' and 'Stomp Box' by Roger Emerson.

A huge thank you must go to all the music teachers involved in last nights performance - Ms Helen Hassett, Ms Aisling Mulcair, Ms Kim Magee, Ms Maedhbh Hughes, Mr Gerry Lacey, Mr Justin Ryan and Mr Bob Batty.

The musical talent in St Colman's is without doubt outstanding and in abundance. Congratulations to all involved in this entertaining end of year performance!

The children from our second classes, who will make their First Holy Communion next year, took part in The Procession of Light and decorated the Jessie Tree. The school orchestra also took to the altar to play for the audience. The service ended with the choir's rendition of 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree'.
