An Evening of Music

Yesterday evening at 6.30pm, parents/guardians and friends of St Colman's gathered in St Paul's Church for an evening of music performed by the talented musicians of the school. The school choir and orchestra have performed on numerous occasions during the school year and have built up quite a repertoire. They chose their favourite and most polished pieces for the very appreciative audience.

The choir sang 'For the Beauty of the Earth' by John Rutter, 'Can you Feel the Love Tonight' from the much loved movie 'The Lion King' and Pharrell Williams toe-tapping tune of 2014 'Happy', all under the careful guidance of Ms Aisling Mulcair & Ms Helen Hasset.

With their conductor, Ms Emer Morris, the orchestra played 'Oh When the Saints go Marching in' made famous by the wonderful Louis Armstrong back in 1938, 'Pachelbel's Canon' by German composer Johann Pachelbel and Coldplay's 'Viva la Vida'.

Isabel, Naomi, Tanya and Mark played violin solos together with Ms Morris. Students, who receive tuition in trumpet and flute from Mr Gerry Lacey and Mr Bob Batty respectively, also played on the night.

The musical talent in St Colman's is without doubt tremendous and in abundance, Congratulations to everyone who was involved in this entertaining end of year performance!

Christmas Carol Service

At approximately 10am this morning, all students and staff made their way to St Paul's Church for our Annual Christmas Carol Service. We were joined by parents, guardians and friends to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with music, song and prayer. The school choir was on the altar and when everyone was seated, they began the first hymn, 'Hallelujah'. Throughout the service, children representing every class group reminded us of the story of Jesus' birth while the members of the living crib gathered on the altar. The readings were interspersed with Christmas hymns sung beautifully by our school choir. Ms Hamill's and Mrs Shiel's Second Classes, who will make their First Holy Communion next year, took part in the 'Procession of Light'and decorated the Jesse Tree. The School Orchestra concluded the service by playing two seasonal pieces.

Evening Recital

At this time of the year, we like to acknowledge and celebrate the musical achievements of our students over the past year. To that end, family and friends were invited to a music recital this evening in St Paul's Church. The choir and orchestra have performed many times during the school year, at Mass, the Christmas Carol Service, the Garda Band performance etc but tonight they chose to sing and play the pieces that they performed at 'Féis Baile Átha Cliath'. Many of our students receive tuition in trumpet, saxaphone and flute and they also played pieces tonight. It was a very enjoyable night of music for the participants and of course the appreciative audience.

Getting Ready...

The beautiful sound of sweet singing voices could be heard around the school this afternoon as the school choir rehearsed for their next performance. Under the careful guidance of Ms Morris, the choir are preparing for 12 0'Clock Mass in St Paul's Church on Sunday May 10th, when our second class students will receive their First Holy Communion. And from what I heard today, anyone who is attending that Mass is in for a musical treat!
