Active School Week in Mrs Lyons' class
We kicked off Active Schools Week on Monday with some Ninja Gymnastics. Ms. Costello put us through our paces and we had lots of fun. On Tuesday we were really lucky to have a session of Forest School with Cathy Daly. We started off with a song called The Wild Ones. Then we did some foraging. This prompted the children to come up with the idea of building a camp fire!!! Next Cathy taught us a little about nettles as these were growing inside a fence nearby. She helped us to identify male and female nettles and showed us the part that stings. We moved to the edge of the laptrack to take a look at the Hazel hedge. Cathy told us that by the time Junior Infants are in Sixth Class hazelnuts may be growing on it. She also told us that squirrels love hazelnuts. We finished our session with a story about dandelions and learned why they are called The Children's Flower. Huge thanks to Cathy for sharing her knowledge and love of nature with us. During the week we also got moving lots by walking on the laptrack in the mornings, we enjoyed an obstacle course and some dancing with Laura Daly Devine and we even tried out Tug of War with Cathy Sheerin. We also cheered on 6th class doing their exercises as part of their fundraiser on Wednesday. On Thursday we surprised our buddies and went to collect them for a Farewell Party on the grass. It certainly has been a busy, varied and fun Active Schools Week and we still have Sports Day to look forward to!
